In the Crab Graveyard

I washed my feet tonight

in the crab graveyard

the sun behind me

tried to ease down

but for the clouds gathered at the sea line

hovered just above, instead.

I slipped through the waves

as they turned their thoughts to the shore

and traveling with them were

countless crabs

in various states of death

and undress

their bodies open

bellies’ empty

of what they had eaten

now they and their meals

sustain another of

Neptune’s kin.

I saw a baby horseshoe crab

–opalescent and translucent–

but when I bent,

that underwater gem

drifted wayward in the grave too.
